- Analysis of U.S. stock settlement data via SEIBro for October 1–15
- Net sell-offs: $215.52 million in Micron and $95.01 million in SanDisk
- Major tech stocks—including Tesla, Meta, and Nvidia—also saw a predominance of sell orders
- $2.2659 billion in net purchases of 3x-leveraged semiconductor ETFs
- Net sell-offs in 3x-inverse semiconductor ETFs; net buying observed in U.S. Treasury and dividend-focused ETFs
South Korean retail investors’ investments in U.S. semiconductor stocks showed mixed trends during the first half of October. While individual semiconductor stocks like Micron and SanDisk saw a predominance of sell orders, there was a large influx of buying into leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs) designed to profit from gains in the semiconductor sector.
According to overseas stock settlement data from SEIBro—the securities information portal of the Korea Securities Depository—Micron Technology recorded a net sell-off of $215,515,353 between October 1 and 15.
Micron’s total sell-side settlement amount reached $404,218,207—more than double the $188,702,854 in buy-side settlements. This volume of sell-side activity ranked second among the top 50 U.S. stocks by sell-side settlement value, trailing only SOXL, a 3x-leveraged semiconductor ETF.
During the same period, SanDisk also recorded a net sell-off of $95,008,006. The total value of sell transactions was $229,605,073, while the total value of buy transactions was $134,597,067.
A trend of net selling was also observed in other semiconductor-related stocks.
For SK Hynix’s American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) listed in the U.S. market, the net sell amount reached $44,013,366—comprising $101,715,895 in sell transactions and $57,702,529 in buy transactions.
Nvidia also saw a net sell amount of $31,684,032, with $140,709,567 in sell transactions and $109,025,535 in buy transactions.
Marvell Technology and Broadcom likewise experienced net selling, with figures of $14,741,263 and $9,295,180, respectively.
Net selling was also evident among other major technology stocks outside the semiconductor sector.
Tesla recorded a net sell amount of $86,650,817. Meta Platforms saw a net sell of $45,166,190, while Palantir Technologies recorded a net sell of $37,706,318.
The ProShares UltraPro QQQ ETF (TQQQ)—which tracks three times the daily return of the Nasdaq-100 Index—also saw a net sell amount of $19,857,311. However, the selling pressure on individual semiconductor stocks did not extend to all related investment products.
During the same period, the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X ETF (SOXL)—which tracks three times the daily performance of the semiconductor sector—saw a net purchase value of $2,265,895,240.
With $3,422,456,182 in total purchases and $1,156,560,942 in total sales, SOXL ranked first in both the combined volume of buy/sell transactions and net purchases.
Conversely, the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bear 3X ETF (SOXS)—which tracks three times the inverse of the semiconductor sector’s daily performance—recorded a net sell value of $92,635,816.
SOXS saw $224,920,604 in sales, exceeding its $132,284,788 in purchases; the volume of sales ranked fourth overall.
In short, while there was significant net buying in SOXL—an investment tied to the growth of the semiconductor sector—there was a net selling trend in SOXS, which bets on a decline in the sector.
Buying interest was also observed in other semiconductor-related investment products.
The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) recorded a net purchase value of $36,184,225. Similarly, the U.S.-listed American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) of the Taiwanese semiconductor firm TSMC saw a net purchase value of $45,676,627. While there was a trend toward selling shares of individual companies like Micron and SanDisk, other areas—such as ETFs focused on the semiconductor sector and certain specific stocks—attracted buying interest, revealing divergent patterns depending on the investment target.
Among the top assets by net purchase value, several non-semiconductor investments stood out.
Quantum computing firm IonQ ranked third, with a net purchase value of $117,288,574.
The iShares 0-3 Month Treasury Bond ETF (SGOV) took the fourth spot, with $105,611,625 in net purchases.
SGOV invests in U.S. Treasury bonds with short remaining maturities. This highlights a shift in investor behavior: capital flowed not only into leveraged ETFs—which bet on rising stock prices—but also into short-term Treasury products, which typically feature lower price volatility.
The Schwab US Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD), which focuses on dividend-paying stocks, ranked sixth with $81,662,733 in net purchases. A Vanguard ETF that tracks the S&P 500—a benchmark U.S. stock market index—also saw $75,084,475 in net purchases.
Additionally, Iris Energy recorded $93,110,934 in net purchases, while Lumentum Holdings saw $61,925,824.
In summary, while investment sentiment toward semiconductors and technology stocks varied by individual company, ultra-short-term U.S. Treasury bonds and dividend-focused ETFs also emerged among the top assets by net purchase value. While there was significant net selling of certain semiconductor stocks—notably Micron and SanDisk—investors remained net buyers of semiconductor-focused ETFs, such as SOXL and SOXX. Divergent trends were also observed among leveraged ETFs designed to bet on the gains or losses of the semiconductor sector.
However, settlement figures alone are not sufficient to conclude that investors are withdrawing capital from a specific sector or shifting their investments toward "safe-haven" assets.
Meanwhile, on the 16th, U.S. semiconductor stocks saw a sharp decline in the New York market, driven by growing concerns regarding the profitability of investments in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and the credit risks associated with related companies.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell by 3.83%, marking its eighth consecutive day of decline. Shares of Micron and Broadcom dropped by 5.63% and 4.52%, respectively, while the ADR for SK Hynix fell by 6.58%.
It should be noted that the data provided by SEIBro (Securities Information Portal) covers the period up to the 15th; therefore, the sharp market decline on the 16th cannot be considered a factor in the aforementioned net selling.
Furthermore, the figures for buy and sell settlements represent the total value of transactions settled during the specified period, which may differ from an investor's actual holdings or realized investment gains and losses. This analysis is based on the top 50 U.S. stocks by settlement value, as provided by SEIBro.

This analysis is based on the top 50 U.S. stocks by settlement value, as provided by SEIBro.
